Master Plan - 1994

In 1994, an update of Friedman's Master Plan recognized the severe constraints on expansion options at the airport. Any expansion that might begin to address the operational limitations would create unacceptable impact on the surrounding community. The Preamble of the 1994 report stated in stark terms what the Airport Authority Board and the Sun Valley area needed to confront as long as 15 years ago: "As pressure for use reaches the physical limits of the facility, we need to look at alternatives away from the Valley cities, rather than expansion at the present site."

The Master Plan update also identified the precise problems that continue to limit options at Friedman: runway and taxiway separations, the relationship of runways and taxiways to surrounding land use and the mountainous terrain surrounding the airport that limits approaches and departures.
